The family of Kiely Rodni broke their silence Monday afternoon after a body “more than likely” that of the missing California teenager was found inside an overturned car under 14 feet of water. Adventures With Purpose, a volunteer group that helps find missing people underwater, was asked to join the search by law enforcement. About 30 minutes after amateur divers began their search Sunday, they found a body and a car believed to be Kiely’s in Prosser Creek Reservoir. “We started our search for Kiely on August 21st at 10:40am. … At 11:15 AM, Nick [Rinn] detected an object underwater using state-of-the-art solar technology for clothing,” diver Doug Bishop said during a news conference Monday. After the discovery, the Rodni-Nieman family said in a statement: “We are eternally grateful for the love and support you have shown us over the past two weeks.” “As we accept this sadness cast under the shadow of death, the rising sun shines upon us, reminding us not to mourn our loss, but to celebrate Kiely’s spirit and the gift we all received from knowing her. “Kiely will definitely stay with us, even though we won’t be taking her back.”

Divers joined the search just as police began to scale back the response
On Aug. 19, the volunteer dive team Adventures with Purpose arrived in Truckee and said it would begin searching for Kiely while police began scaling back their own response, the Sacramento Bee reported. Volunteer divers then began searching the water at Prosser Creek Reservoir through Sunday. Spokesman Josh Cantu said although police said Prosser Creek Reservoir had already been covered by police in a “thorough” search, his dive team found an object that shouldn’t be there. This was the car and body that possibly belonged to Ms. Rodni. Gino Spocchia has the full story here:

Gabby Petito’s father offers his condolences
Joe Petito, the father of Gabby Petito who disappeared during a trip out of the country last year, offered his condolences to Keely Rodney’s family. “My condolences to the family of Kiely Rondi. May he rest in peace (sic),” he tweeted on Monday. Mr Petito added: “Emotions come back to the surface when you see things like this.” Last September, Gabby, then 22, disappeared during a trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie. Her strangled body was discovered the following month on the edge of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Lundry admitted to killing her in a notebook discovered near his body in a Florida swamp where he killed himself, authorities said. Alisha Rahaman Sarkar23 August 2022 06:35 1661230800
The water “receded” into the lake where Kiely’s car was found
Capt. Sam Brown with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said some of the information circulating in media reports was “misleading.” When asked by reporters how the agencies lost the car – which was said to be only 15 feet under water, according to the AWP – Captain Brown said that since Kiely’s disappearance on August 6, the water level had plummeted three feet and possibly 20 to 25 feet offshore. Lorry police defend themselves against criticism over search for Kiely
Law enforcement officials have offered a variety of reasons why they have been unable to find the body in the weeks since Kiely was last seen at a party at the Prosser Family Campground attended by 200 to 300 teenagers and young adults. Prosser Creek Reservoir, a lake adjacent to the camp, had previously been extensively searched by law enforcement who had spent more than 20,000 hours trying to find the missing teenager. Nevada County Sheriff’s Capt. Sam Brown credited authorities, peace officers and volunteers for “eliminating areas that we would still search” and clearing the way for the AWP to find the body – which has not yet been officially identified . Andrea Blanco has the story detailing the authorities’ response to the criticism:

Body was found by amateur divers searching for Kiely Rodni after weeks of searching
On Sunday, a dive crew announced they had found a body and an overturned car in the Prosser Creek Reservoir in Truckee, California – appearing to bring a tragic end to a massive two-week search for the missing teenager. Adventures With Purpose (AWP), a volunteer search organization that helps find missing persons, said the 2013 silver Honda CRV was upside down 14 feet under water in the lake and that a body was inside. The organization said the vehicle – matching the make and model of Kiely’s – has the teenager’s California license plate number 8YUR127 and that the remains are believed to be those of the missing 16-year-old. Law enforcement authorities have yet to formally identify the body. Rachel Sharp has the story:

Authorities say they did not advise AWP not to search the lake where the body was found
Capt. Sam Brown with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office denied claims by an AWP diver that they were told the lake had already been extensively searched, saying law enforcement officials “shared maps, ping information and location” with the volunteer organization. “The folks at Adventures with Purpose did a fantastic job of being able to locate the vehicle as quickly as they did, based on, again, a lot of heavy lifting that the folks behind me did over the last two weeks,” Sheriff Shannon said Moon, as California Highway Patrol and Nevada County officials stood behind her. Police say they learned Kiely’s car had been found after reading a post on social media
When asked by reporters how they found out Kiely’s car was found by Adventure with Purpose divers, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement had read an online posting. “I don’t know that we got an initial call, I think we contacted them after we read about it online,” Capt. Sam Brown said. “From the single command … none of us were [made] aware of.” Captain Brown said it was possible one of the 150 investigators involved in the search had received a call, but he did not release the information. The body found in Prosser Creek Reservoir has not yet been confirmed by Kiely
Authorities said at a news conference Monday morning that officials have not yet been able to confirm the identity of the body found inside a vehicle at Prosser Creek Reservoir in Truckee, California, but they believe it is that of the 16-year-old. “We believe he is our missing person,” Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon said. “We couldn’t identify positively [her]but it’s more than likely where we are right now.” Rachel Sharp has more on updates from law enforcement:
