Photo: Castanet Staff The BCGEU has stepped up employment action, declaring a ban on overtime. In a press release Monday morning, the union says it is declaring a ban on non-emergency overtime for members working in the BC public service, effective immediately. However, the overtime ban will not apply to members employed by the BC Wildfire Service during the current fire season. In addition to the overtime ban, targeted action for BC Liquor Distribution Branch wholesale and distribution center jobs remains in place, says the union, which represents 33,000 members of the BC General Employees Union across the province. “BC’s public service has relied on our members’ overtime for far too long, and addressing the systemic issues behind that reliance is part of what we’re trying to achieve in this round of negotiations,” said chairwoman Stephanie Smith. “We hope this escalation will give the government the incentive it needs to invite us back to the negotiating table and negotiate a deal that will secure strong, sustainable public services for our province and a fair deal for BCGEU members and all public sector workers”.
