OAKLAND, CA – A woman was shot and killed after parking in Oakland’s Little Saigon in what police described as an attempted robbery. Dr. Lili Xu, 60, a dentist in Oakland’s Chinatown, was attacked about 2 a.m. Sunday near the corner of 5th Avenue and East 11th Street. Surveillance video shows Xu and her boyfriend getting into their Mercedes to park on the side of the road. Within seconds, a white Lexus pulls up next to them. Then screams and three gunshots are heard.

Xu died in a hospital. “For some unknown reason, the subject fired multiple rounds, striking the victim,” said Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong. “This crime was senseless, unfortunate, and the Little Saigon neighborhood has been affected by violence in recent weeks,” the chief said, referring to another fatal shooting of an Uber food driver, burglaries and shootings that left a woman injured. as she was struck by stray bullets while she slept. At a rally outside Oakland City Hall, Stuart Chen, chairman of the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council, said, “I’m so sick and tired of hearing about Asian Americans being targeted.” Referring to the city council, Chen said: “I’m asking the council, I’m asking the chief, when will it stop? And there are solutions. I know there are solutions.” Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said, “One of the ways to deal with this type of crime is to have a police presence in the neighborhood. If the police are there, they get involved.” Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, who represents Little Saigon, said: “We know this hasn’t been happening for a few months or years, it’s been happening for decades. And we know this targeting of our community has to stop.” Oakland police on Monday appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information.
