The owner of the Jeep says he left the SUV parked outside the Winnipeg Health Sciences Center while he was in the hospital with his father in August 2020 and when he came out, it was gone, according to a statement of claim filed in Manitoba Court. Queen’s Bench on 5th August. The Jeep was found abandoned on the 302 freeway a short time later, and was heavily vandalized. Parts of the vehicle were missing, so the cost to repair the SUV exceeded its value. The man submitted an insurance claim to MPI, but the following January was told by MPI that his request for coverage had been rejected because he had provided the Crown company with a false statement, the court document says. The nature of the alleged misrepresentation was not specified. MPI communications manager Kristy Rydz said in an email that the company is unable to comment on legal matters or any specific customer claim information for privacy reasons. No statement of defense has yet been filed. The man says in the lawsuit that he didn’t lie on purpose and believes he was owed the value of the Jeep, according to the terms of his insurance policy. He sued MPI for the cost of his vehicle, which is $62,000, as well as legal costs. Under the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation Act, a claim made by anyone who makes a knowingly false statement will be void and any insurance money will be forfeited.
