The Nothing Phone (1) was released earlier this year as the first smartphone from Carl Pei’s startup. There’s understandably been a lot of hype surrounding a new device from the OnePlus co-founder, and it’s had relatively good first impressions. The unique design, “glyph” lighting interface and solid software that Nothing showcases as the highlight of the device. However, the update commitment on the Nothing Phone (1) isn’t exactly top-notch. The device promises three years of major Android updates and four years of bi-monthly security updates. By comparison, Google offers three years of major Android updates and five years of monthly security updates on its latest Pixels, and Samsung offers four years of major Android updates on its Galaxy smartphones. When asked about the timeline for Android 13 for the Nothing Phone (1) last week, Carl Pei offered no useful information, essentially saying it doesn’t matter. Speaking to the folks at Android Authority, Nothing says that the Android 13 update for the Nothing Phone (1) won’t arrive until the first half of 2023, meaning they’re at least four months away from launch. We are always working hard to improve the user experience of Phone 1. To ensure this, OS updates will be available for regular download. As for Android 13, this will be released for Phone 1 users in the first half of 2023. Before the release, we want to coordinate the software upgrade with Nothing’s hardware. We’ll be sure to keep you posted with further information. For a skin that is relatively close to stock, this timeline is pretty amazing. It’s especially hard to see what’s taking Nothing so long, given that Samsung is expected to release the first stable Android 13 updates in October or November. Even OnePlus, with its less-than-ideal recovery, will likely get a few Android 13 updates by the end of the year.
