Samsung announced that the Z Fold 4 is getting support for the Expert RAW app, which allows users to manually change camera settings and shoot in RAW. The Expert RAW app is an incredibly powerful tool for Android photographers that gives users the control they can normally only get from a manual camera, such as setting ISO or adjusting shutter speeds in addition to being able to shoot in RAW. Samsung’s app is also free. The latest update to the app adds Z Fold 4 support and also includes the ability to save custom presets. The company also claims to have made improvements for images taken in low light. The ability to edit RAW photos also greatly enhances the options for phone photography, both for those already channeling experience from full-frame cameras and novice photographers looking to learn the ropes with the gear they already own. Expert RAW was introduced earlier this year for some of Samsung’s flagship phones, including the latest Galaxy lines from the S21 and up. The Z Fold 4 already has a decent camera arsenal with three rear lenses, including a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. For reference, this is the same setup that the Galaxy S22 has. That’s not to mention the huge screen that makes view finding and post-processing so much easier.
The Galaxy S22 is also receiving updates
Not to be outdone by Samsung’s true flagship, the Galaxy S22 is getting camera updates of its own. This includes added support for the telephoto lens in rear zoom mode, improved performance for QR code reading, optimization for memory and AI engine, optimized image quality for photos and videos, sharpness and contrast intensity settings, and color and dark night mode brightness. according to a post by a moderator working on the camera on Samsung’s Korean forum. The post touts additional features coming soon, including an astro-gliding mode reportedly in development and improvements to the ultra-low-light mode, though no timeline was given for these potential future updates. There is no similar post on the US based Samsung forums. However, the same user noted that support for Z Fold and preset storage are coming to Expert RAW in July, adding credibility to the source. The added Expert RAW support remains a welcome update for phone photographers, as do the continued improvements to the main camera app for the S22.
