In a statement, RCMP said they were called to the scene around 6 a.m “According to early information, a semi rear ended the second that was destroyed on the freeway,” said Cpl. Mike Halskov said in an email. The driver of one truck is dead and the other is in serious condition, the statement continued. Images from the scene shared on social media show a semi-fire and the apparent aftermath, with car parts strewn on the road and the charred remains of a tractor trailer. The highway was closed “due to the intense nature of the fire,” Halskoff said, adding that the closure was expected to be “extensive.” The local fire department and the BC Fire Service have also been called. Drive BC is warning that traffic will be disrupted “intermittently” and is advising drivers to detour by taking Highway 5A to Highway 3. Traffic is still flowing northbound on Coquihalla, but anyone traveling the route is asked to watch for crews and expect delays.
