The state agency responsible for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish and habitats said the incident happened in the Glenagannon River in Inishowen. Inland Fisheries Ireland was alerted to the significant fish kill by a member of the public via its 24-hour confidential helpline on Friday. It confirmed that more than 2,250 young Atlantic trout and salmon were killed. The fish kill area covered about four kilometers of the river and included several year classes of fish. Inland Fisheries Ireland said it is following a “definite line of inquiry” to determine the cause, which may lead to legal proceedings being brought. Northwest River Basin District Manager Milton Matthews thanked the person who alerted them to the incident immediately. “This enabled our environmental team in Letterkenny to begin our investigations without delay,” he said. “This can be critical to identifying and confirming the underlying cause of fish kills such as the one in the Glenagannon River.”
