The alleged shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. at Madison Park Academy, a school for sixth- through 12th-graders in East Oakland’s Sobrante Park neighborhood, police said. A 13-year-old Madison Park student was injured and taken to a nearby hospital, KTVU reported. The alleged shooter, a 12-year-old boy, was arrested, according to police. It is unclear if the child is a student at the school. Madison Park Academy has since been evacuated, with footage from KTVU showing parents flocking around the school to pick up their children. The shooting remains under investigation, the station reports. The gun was seized by the police. A representative from the Oakland Unified School District declined to comment to SFGATE, instead deferring to Oakland police. Oakland police did not respond to a request for comment from SFGATE. Hours after the shooting, Oakland Police Chief Leron Armstrong spoke at a news conference about a recent spate of gun violence in the city after six people were killed in four days. He also referred to this shooting. “I’m afraid our community has become numb to this horrible behavior,” Armstrong said. “…Unfortunately, gun violence affects our schools as well.” SFGATE News Editor Amy Graff contributed to this report.
