Raheem Mostert went undrafted in 2015 and was subsequently cut by six different teams before landing as a starter back in San Francisco with the 49ers. Isaiah McKenzie was waived midseason by the Broncos in 2018. He enters the 2022 season as Buffalo’s starting slot.
Teams have until 4 p.m. ET Tuesday to reduce their roster size to 53 players, and I’m keeping an eye on the released players most deserving of being added by another team. I’ll continue to update this tracker as more moves roll in on Tuesday — those 53-man rosters aren’t finalized. Below you’ll see those players, with information about which team released them, the round they were drafted in — if applicable — and a link to the Mockdraftable spider chart showing how they tested at the combine or at their pro day when they were prospects. Released By: Eagles Draft Status: Round 2 – 2015 Positional Athleticism: Above Average Insurance with Tartt’s level of experience and productivity is not randomly available every August. He played in 80 regular season games for the 49ers starting in 2015 and collected four picks with 18 pass breakups along with an average of 56 total tackles per season. Tartt’s type of safety has become fashionable recently in the NFL, with a run-of-the-mill safety that violently attacks the middle of the field and the line of scrimmage. He had five tackles and a sack in Super Bowl LIV. Just 30 years old, Tartt should have plenty of suitors on the open market. Because he’s a veteran — more than four years in the NFL — he’s not subject to waivers and can immediately sign with another team. Check the opt-in box to confirm you want to join.

Released By: BearsDraft Status: Round 6 – 2021 Position Athletics: Well Below Average Newsome was my #TrustTheTape prospect in the class of 2021. He tested scary. On the field in North Carolina, Newsome was electric. Newsome produced all four seasons for the Tar Heels and had over 1,000 yards with 10 touchdowns as a junior in 2019. He was part of this article last year, in fact, when the Bears released him before the 53-man cut. He was signed to Chicago’s practice squad and caught two passes for 23 yards in a handful of appearances late in the season. Now, the 2019 ACC season has become mostly irrelevant, and his poor lineup looks more like it was a strong indication that Newsome simply isn’t athletic enough to consistently win as a slot wideout in the NFL. After a strong minicamp and flashes in training camp, Newsome had just two carries for 27 yards in the preseason. It deserves the list as a gadget type slot receiver. Released By: Broncos Draft Status: Round 5 – 2013 Position Sport: N/A Check out player stats from 2021 — net betting average, that is — and you’ll see Martin near the top. His 42.8 average was third best in football and his 28 punts dropped to 20 were tied for fifth in the NFL. Year-to-year consistency is crucial for players, and in each of the last three seasons, Martin has finished 12th or better in net average. For a club looking to upgrade the position player, Martin should be the first priority. Players are people too, remember.
